[Old Man of Coniston]

Old Man of Coniston (December 2003)

The Old Man is at the southern edge of the high Lakeland fells - the summit (803m) is on the left hand side of this picture, with Brim Fell (796m) on the right. The industrial remains of slate quarries and copper mines cover its eastern slopes, but do not dominate the rugged landscape. This view greets the eye outside the Coppermines Youth Hostel, converted mine offices.
